Ok, this really looks like it.  Mellisa woke up this morning exceptionally moany.  (I can recognize the moans before they happen now).  All the signs are there:

  • Contractions at less than 5 min apart for the past hour or two
  • More stuff that’s gross
  • Exceptional moaniness

I’ll be updating this post as the action happens.  I’ll also be updating twitter (, which you can see on the right side →

(you can text “follow chase_reeves” to 40404 to get text updates when I update my twitter status. Make sure you keep it all lower-case, including the “follow.”)

11:49am: We’re not heading to the hospital yet, but it’s so on!  Gonna walk and bounce on the birth ball till it’s booyah time (probably another hour or two?).  Daddy made up a couple mix CD’s to keep mom fired up in the hospital.  I put this one on and immediately started to cry… can’t wait to meet my son… Cinematic Orchestra – To Build A Home

12:11pm: Mellisa is trying to get me to stop working on setting up the blog now… ok.

12:22pm: “Ok let’s do this babe” means, “let’s go on a friggen serious walk.” Leaving now to walk a bit…

2:07pm: Just got back from a walk. Contractions are at about 2.5-3 minutes apart, lasting for over a minute each.  Looks like we’ll be heading to the hospital soon!  Mellisa says these contractions are real strong.  Best advice so far was from her moomer: focus on the power of the contraction; how much closer it’s bring us to our son.  Great advice!

5:07pm: Took a shower and went out on another walk… Even I’m getting tired from all this.  Hips and knees are sore on both of us. Went and got some pizza (cuz we heard that helps make babies come out).  Mellisa just got in a bath to keep pushing things along.  We’re thinking of getting into the hospital to see how dilated she is.  Moms and dad’s are on their way to join the party!

5:57pm: Sat on the couch and talked for a bit… now Mellisa wants to go on another walk! The bath was supposed to stop things if it was a false labor; nothing has stopped — this is the real deal! Movie →

7:29pm: Just got to the hospital! Contractions have started to pick up the past hour or two… feels like the real deal.this time our room has a window. Waiting to check on how dilated she is… stay tuned.

8:12pm: Just found out how dilated she is!!! Zero. Holy shit. What a bummer. We’re bummed. Its bum-factor is high. My parents just landed. Moomer is on a bus from freaking eskimo territory (because it will get here faster than if she flew… Eskimos bum me out too). Kind of a bombshell this is.

It’s weird because the contractions have been big, consistent, and lasting at least a minute… but none of them have started stretching out the cervix. Oosa, deep breaths, back on the horse and ride.

8:55pm: We’re just about to leave the hospital. My mom and dad just got here… hope we can make this happen soon so they can participate. Mellisa is really bummed, but we just bought a breastpump; it’s go time!

9:56pm: Still in the hospital… Mellisa’s blood pressure keeps going up so the doctor wants to see what’s up with that… getting real tired. Mellisa’s pumping her breasts with a breast pump. C’mon baby Aiden, we’re all loving you so hard.

10:40pm: Looks like we’ll be staying in the hospital overnight. #FML. My poor wife is real bummed. It’s ok. We’ll be fine. When it rains…

2:04am: Mellisa wakes me up cuz her contractions have gotten really strong. They’re lasting for a good long while now (1.5-2 min it seems like). She’s ultra moany through these. Just got cervix checked 1cm dilated. Trying to just focus and push through… it can sometimes take forever to get to 3cm and then the rest goes real quick… please!?

7:34am: Daddy crashed out for a few hours… but Mellisa has been up with contractions almost all night.  We put her in a bath a few times and she was able to get a little shut-eye between contractions (that’s about 5 minutes of almost sleep between painful 1 minute contractions… she’s an animal). We’ve got a great new nurse this morning… C’mon Aiden; is July 12th the day?  We’ve still got strong, really strong, contractions. The nurse just confirmed that most times it takes a good long while to get from 1-4 cm, but from there it starts to move along quickly.

9:14am: Our nurse, Sally, is awesome. Very sweet. She’s helping us keep things moving. We’re looking for any headaches/nausea, or trembling. That’s a sign that things have turned the corner and we’re stretching pretty good. Mom and Baby are doing well. Aiden’s doing better than Mellisa, but both are well. Thanks everyone for the support on twitter/facebook.

12:03pm: Just broke Mellisa’s water!  This should speed things along.  The doula is on her way in and Moomer is landing in 2 hours. Looks like the baby has a bit of meconium going on… I’ll spare you the details. Hopefully this will kick things into gear. COME ON BABY AIDEN… we’re rooting for you. Right now we’re at almost 30 hours of labor.

3:16pm: Strong STRONG contractions have been coming on for a while now. Our doula is here (Caylan who just gave birth to 7 wk daughter!) and she’s helping us push ourselves further. Can’t wait till Mellisa’s mom get’s here so daddy can steal away for a nap.

Just going in for another cervical check now… roll the dice! C’mon dood! 3cm! We’re just over 3cm dilated and about 90% effaced… Nurse is anticipating that stuff is gonna hit the fan by 5pm; that’s when the real gnarly stuff gets started. Possible baby tonight midnight-3am, or tomorrow.

THIS IS IT!!! It’s wild. It’s like we never thought this would come, but we’re still so far away… Strength for the journey.

6:09pm: She’s going strong. Almost no rest at all between contractions.  Moomer is here, which is a huge help to Mellisa. She’s just over 4 cm dilated. Getting in the bath. I just woke up, and I’m just about worthless… ramping up.

6:58pm: Things are moving quick! Feeling the urge to push every now and again which means the head is dropping. Moomer is saying helpful things like, “Okey doke. In the nose…” We’re focusing a ton on just focusing on breathing. Imagining the breaths covering over Aiden, cleaning the chamber, getting him ready. This is the real deal. Pushing past 4 cm… we’ll do another check in a little bit… Man, these contractions are nuts: 1min off, 2-3min on. It took me 25 minutes to write this update!

7:22pm: We’re at 5cm. That’s great! From there it’s supposed to be quick. Mellisa was hoping for more dilation, so is kinda bummed. So were cooing her, telling her she can do it. She Can. I love her so hard. She’s so strong!

Tip: Change Positions. It’s because Mellisa hasn’t been on her back throughout this that things are moving along so healthy. It’s a long time, but there’s no drugs, antibiotics or anything else that can have a negative effect on the baby going on. Changing the positions has been the key.  And it hasn’t been easy at all, but really effective.

8:39pm: Still working… seems like we’re in the calm before the storm, which is normal just before transition, which is when the shit hits the fan.

10:26pm Still contracting. Daddy got a little respite in the bathroom; sacred space. Mom is fighting hard…

11:11pm We’re talking about using some Petosin, a chemical that increases birthing action. Just checked to see where she is… still at 6cm. WTF? They say the first pregnancy is always the hardest/longest, this one is no exception. The drawback of petosin is that it sometimes makes things over-intense, in an unnatural way, that can make a c-section much more likely. I think we’ll probably drip a bit of petosin and see where that puts us. Can always cut it off.

1:00am: Well, we’re certain his birthday will be July 13th. I was pulling for the 12th. We went for the petosin… it’s kicked the contractions up a bunch. She’s on her side now; we need aiden to roll just a bit to get his head in optimal ‘get-through-the-pelvis’ position. This is hard. I think we’re at 41 hours of labor so far… holy shit. My wife is the strongest person I know.

1:15am: I love that we’ve been able to keep my friends in touch with all this.  Here’s a poem from Don, what a sweet, sweet gift:

1:40am: We’re still contracting away… Hopeful that we’ll get to watch the sunrise with our son.  There was a moment where Mellisa was speaking freely to Aiden, “Come on my son… come out now.. come and see your room… your father wants to get tattoos with you…” She said it with kind of a cry in her voice (mid-contraction). It was awesome.

2:00am: Did another cervical check… dammit; only 7.5 cm. Very minimal progress. Docs are getting antsy (they just love to do c-sections for some reason). So we got in the bath to relax Melisa, see if that will relax the cervix and get it to open up some more… I’m wondering when is the optimal time to ingest my Monster energy beverage.

3:01am: In the bath the contractions got a bit harder. That’s great. Doc says: either we up petosin to make this more intense or we do a light drug to relax her. The light drug only lasts about 45min. Moomer used it on one of her ten children; it made her fall asleep between contractions, get a little loopy, but relaxed her cervix and took her from 5 to 10 cm when she was stuck. We want to stick to the all natural, passionate about that. This seems to be something, though, that is right for the baby, right for the mom. Let’s do it.

3:20am: The drug (fentanyl) is working… she’s totally falling asleep between contractions, but contractions are coming on every 2-3 minutes… and they’re getting even stronger. Hey, Cervix: please, PLEASE be stretching. I’m feeling alright. Surprisingly untired for having supported my wife through 43 hours of labor thus far. I was worried about what this would be like; worried that I wouldn’t be able to give her the right support. But she pulls it out of me. She needs me so bad in the middle of her contractions that the very best I have comes gushing out. Sometimes in the middle of pain that’s disorienting her, she’ll stare up at me and lock eyes like she’s never seen be before, but she needs me like a 4 year old needs a dad. That’s new.

3:34am: Contractions have gotten a lot stronger and she says they make her feel like she really wants to push. Just checked cervix, 8cm dilated, 100% effaced. This is great news. 100% effaced means… well.. look it up. What it means for us is that there’s progress, and significant progress. They’re calling the actual delivery doc now to see what’s next. Moomer prayed for us when mellisa fell asleep… just checked again… COMPLETE! HOLY SHIT! “Can I push now!?” waiting for the doctor…

4:24am: Apparently the nurse who said we were at 10cm dilated was wrong. We’re still at about 8. ANOTHER F-ing FALSE ALARM!.. now doc wants us to get an epidural. She thinks that will completely relax and allow Mellisa’s cervix to chill all the way out. We don’t like the consequences of that. We’re going to see where we are in an hour.

5:11am: looks like we’re going with the epidural – it’s our best chance for a vaginal birth. The whole problem is that her cervix is at just about 8cm and has been for a long time. The epidural is going to relax that, hopefully. One fucking thing after the next.

9:12am: Daddy passed out. Fell on the couch, comatose. Mellisa is feeling good; epidural has her relaxed, at 9cm. She’s bummed she’s all numb… want’s to be responsive to the baby, but everything just feels like ‘pressure.’ Healthy, and f-ing ready to have this boy. Aiden!?

12:38pm: Still waiting to push. Hospital tour video for you:

1:04pm: Doc came back and inspected, looks like we’re finally fully dilated. Mellisa is so wiped. As pain is starting to come back, she barely has enough energy to push… But it’s time to start pushing… so we’re pushing.

2:42pm: Moomer here… ok it is looking good.   She is pushing to beat the band and it is working.  Were almost past the hard part.  We are so excited.  Baby was posterior but the doc was able to turn him.  Thank you God.

3:55pm: After a long time pushing I was starting to loose a little hope… may be a c-section after all. Doc get’s out the suction vacuum to pull on the baby’s head while Mellisa pushes. Long time of pushing again.. only a few contractions with the suction… I could see the top of the head in there, dark hair!!! i start to loose it, regain composure, and keep <span style=” style=”text-decoration: line-through;”>screaming at coaching Mellisa (definitely was told to keep it down a few times… I’m like, this isn’t the country club goddamit!).

4:17pm: My son’s head pops out and looks rediculously wrong to me…. so I focus on mellisa and have her keep pushing… me and moomer are screaming our heads off! Doc goes, “Whoa! Whoah! everyone chill out. You two: keep quiet.”  He bursts right out after that!! Ok, i’m done updating you for the time being. Stick with twitter and go here for the images to blow your mind:

WE LOVE YOU ALL. Thank you for all the love and support. I cant believe she did it… my wife is the strongest person on earth. Unbelievable.
